Endoscopic Ear Surgery in London

A minimally invasive approach to modern ear surgery

Traditional ear surgery is performed using an operating microscope. Endoscopic ear surgery uses a high-definition endoscope placed through the ear canal, allowing the surgeon to see around corners and access areas that can be difficult to visualise using conventional techniques.

Mr Patel performs the majority of his ear surgery using endoscopic techniques and is a founding member of the British Endoscopic Ear Group (BEEG).

Why Endoscopic Ear Surgery?

The Advantages

  • No external incision behind the ear in many cases
  • Improved visualisation of hidden anatomy
  • Reduced tissue disruption
  • Faster recovery
  • Less post-operative discomfort
  • Excellent cosmetic outcomes

Not every patient is suitable

While endoscopic techniques offer many advantages, some patients benefit from a microscopic or combined approach. Surgical planning is always tailored to the individual.

Conditions That Can Be Treated Endoscopically

Cholesteatoma and Retraction

Tympanic Membrane Perforation

Endoscopic techniques allow excellent visualisation of hidden recesses where disease commonly persists.

Mr Patel performs repair of almost all perforations entirely through the ear canal without an external incision. This can be performed awake.

Otosclerosis

Ossicular Chain Reconstruction

High-definition visualisation can facilitate precise hearing restoration surgery. This is coupled with awake techniques to allow on table testing of hearing to ensure optimal hearing outcomes.

Our Experience

Endoscopic First Surgeon

Mr Patel is first and foremost an endoscopic ear surgeon, having trained in and practised this technique for over eight years with over 200 endoscopic procedures to date. He performs the majority of his ear procedures using endoscopic techniques and has extensive experience across the full spectrum of endoscopic ear surgery, from routine tympanoplasty and stapes surgery to complex cholesteatoma surgery and hearing reconstruction.

His expertise in endoscopic ear surgery has led to invitations to faculty positions on multiple national and international courses, where he demonstrates both routine and advanced endoscopic techniques through lectures, live surgery, and surgical simulation.

Academic Leadership

As one of the founding members of the British Endoscopic Ear Group, Mr Patel is passionate about promoting the adoption of endoscopic ear surgery. He is also a member of the International Working Group of Endoscopic Ear Surgeons, where videos of his operations are indexed as reference material for colleagues seeking to develop their endoscopic skills.

Mr Patel is regularly invited to lecture on advanced endoscopic techniques, including several approaches that he has helped pioneer. These include awake endoscopic ear surgery, which enables patients to observe their operation in real time should they wish, and office-based endoscopic ear surgery, where selected procedures can be performed without fasting, general anaesthesia, or attendance in a traditional operating theatre. This approach offers a quicker, less intrusive, and more convenient surgical experience for patients.
